Tell us about Atelier Rahman

Atelier Rahman is a ‘top to toe’ bespoke design and couture service. We specialise in grooms wear and alternative bridal wear. Our creations have gender-neutral styling meaning whatever the make-up of your wedding party; bride and groom, same sex (male or female), gender-neutral, religious, traditional or rock ‘n’ roll, Atelier Rahman will help you tailor a statement suit with your personality in mind.

Our designs fall into 3 areas;

Classics; fine tailored bespoke suiting for the office, formal occasions and smart casual

Couture; inspired by baroque and neo-classical style with the bulk of our creations produced with each individual client in mind

Casual; everyday wear or nights out need never be the same again with our bold and bespoke lux casual wear.

No matter which type of garment you choose, there’s always a twist and surprise contained on the inside or the coat or the back of the collar. But utmost is our client - drawing out what matter and developing colour palettes and designs that flatter and displays elements of their personality.

How did you get into tailoring?

Both my parents were tailors, so I’ve always been surrounded by the industry. But the main drive has been an awareness of the dearth of choice for grooms. The expectation is morning suits or lounge suits in black or grey… and if you’re daring blue.

That’s where we stepped in and decided we don’t need to stick to the Victorian-era dictact of black suits for men and white dresses for ladies. We started with a key question ‘why can’t guys wear white and having flowing trails if the so which?’ and from there we decided to change the rules and created the white tuxedo with 2m trail! Safe to say we ripped up the tailoring rule book and adopted the best of classical tailoring with contemporary design to create Avant Garde pieces that are truely unique in every possible way - feel, look, touch, hang, drape and flow.

What’s the process of working with you?

Initial contact is usually via phone to ascertain date of the wedding to understand feasibility to produce and deliver the proposed commission. This is followed by an invitation to book an appointment to attend a consultation.

At the first consultation you can expect to be greeted with welcome drinks and nibbles from our Atelier bar. We take the time to learn as much as we can about you the client – what you like/dislike, things you really want and things to avoid, any family traditions that we need to be aware of, cultural nuances, where the ceremony will take place, what the mode of travel will be if any and much more besides. The objective? To figure what the best colour options might be and the cloths to use (we have over 2500 cloth options), the form and functionality of the design to ensure cloth is breathable, comfortable, drapes and hands well and of course looks good on the particular body shape.

We’ll give you the opportunity to try on some of our catwalk pieces to give you inspiration to broaden your thoughts on the design ideas and realise more of what’s possible. Some garments will be manipulated to give you a better idea of how certain features added or removed could be moulded to become the start of your unique creation. You will be given the opportunity to sample the variety of cloth swatches and to touch and feel the quality of our raw materials.

We’ll take a detailed set of measurements dependent on the items you will want to have created by us, enhancing your natural shape and boosting your confidence, and where needed we will sketch out your design concepts during the first consultation to agree the final design.

Production – once the final order is agreed, production of garments can take 6-12 weeks.

Fittings – you will be invited for first fittings as soon as the garments are nearing completion.

Final tweaks – whilst most will fit well on first fittings, we may need to make adjustments to accommodate changes in body shape due to weight changes.

Wrap and pack – and its essentially yours ready for your big day.

Dressing service – where possible we do offer a dressing service for you on the morning of your big day – this can provided either in our studio or on location at your wedding venue/hotel.

In a nutshell, each of our clients are unique and as such our personalised, customised, bespoke service cannot be any more unique as the Atelier Rahman service.

How soon do people need to book you?

Book early and please don’t leave it to the last moment to book appointments. As our creations are made by hand from scratch, from cloth to couture, production can take up to 12 weeks, so as soon as possible after you’ve set a date for your big day is preferable and orders should be agreed at least 3 months before your big day.

In exceptional circumstances we will consider orders 8 weeks before the wedding date although this is not always possible, especially during peak wedding season.

What piece of advice would you give

For grooms in particular we would say, you are not mere accessories that hang off your partner’s arm, nor are you a guest at your own wedding – YOU ARE THE GROOM and are to be encouraged to stand out on your big day. (Don’t let the Mother-in-Law’s hat be the only star of the show!)

The wedding is NOT just about the bride (or one partner), it is about two people coming together, complimenting each other in life, love and style and, as such, both should shine on their joint big day.

So, groom’s be bold and don’t be shy to create a vision that fulfils your dreams of the perfect outfit and draws out the best of your silhouette.

Your proudest make/achievement

Too many to list – we’re proud of every single creation for our clients. To see faces light up when they lock eyes on their completed creations for the first time is beyond priceless and we live to see that moment every time we do our big reveal.

We’re particularly proud to have served male clients who had body-confidence issues (yes it’s not a women-only thing – men are just as body conscious as women, the only difference is men don’t like to talk about it or admit it).

One notable example of a proud achievement was to make a Hamilton-inspired wedding outfit for the groom and his best man, where the groom had battled and survived bladder cancer. We created a suit that allowed him to tuck his shirt into his trousers (which is not usually possible due to attachment of a stoma bag to the abdomen area) and created camouflage to the stoma bag, matching the shirt and trousers so it blended in, allowing the groom to wear a complete outfit without seeing an obvious attachment to his body.

Did we mention we’re an award-winning Atelier with numerous awards including the latest Groomswear tailor 2021 as awarded by Luxlife magazine.
